Man shot to death in Gresham

A man was fatally shot in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side Friday morning.

At 11:33 a.m., Stephen Toplin, 24, was sitting in front of a residence in the 7600 block of South Damen when someone walked up to him and began shooting, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the same block as the shooting.

Toplin was shot in the back and pronounced dead at 12:03 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Area South detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
