17-year-old boy shot to death in East Chatham

A 17-year-old boy was shot to death Friday evening in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

The teen was found unresponsive by officers about 4:45 p.m. in the 800 block of East 83rd Street, according to Chicago Police.

He suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 5:43 p.m., police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Semaj L. Berry.

An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the chest. He lived the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.

No one was in custody early Tuesday as Area South detectives conduct a homicide investigation.
