Fire destroys Des Plaines auto shop

An automotive shop went up in flames Friday afternoon in northwest suburban Des Plaines, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters were initially called about a car on fire about 1:25 p.m. at Car-X, 1108 E. Oakton St., according to the Des Plaines Fire and Police departments.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke could be seen venting from the building and the inside was engulfed in flames, authorities said. Two employees at the shop at the time of the fire managed to get out of the building before first responders arrived and were not injured.

The building sustained significant damage, including a roof collapse, authorities said.

Lanes in both directions on Oakton Street were closed while the fire was fought.

The cause of the blaze was still under investigation.
