A 17-year-old boy is in custody after a fatal stabbing Wednesday afternoon in northwest Indiana.

Officers were called to a stabbing at 1:36 p.m. in the 4900 block of Oak Avenue in Hammond, according to Hammond police.

Manuel Mendez, 45, was found with a stab wound to his chest inside his apartment, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office. He was taken to Franciscan Health in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m., authorities said.

The 17-year-old was taken to into custody in the 4900 block of Columbia Avenue in Hammond, police said. A motive for the stabbing was still under investigation.
