A man was in critical condition Monday morning after falling down an elevator shaft on the Near West Side.

The 46-year-old man fell down an elevator shaft in a building in the 1300 block of West Carroll at 7:50 a.m., according to Chicago Police.

He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.

Police said the fall appeared to be accidental.
