A man has been charged with murder for killing his 69-year-old mother inside their home Wednesday afternoon in Gary, Indiana.

Joseph Nelson, 32, was charged with murder Friday morning for his mother’s death, according to a statement from Gary police. Police said he “attacked” his motherin their home in the 500 block of Kentucky Street.

About 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the house for a welfare check on Annie Nelson, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office. Firefighters and officers forced their way into the home after not hearing any response.

Annie Nelson was dead at the scene. She suffered blunt force trauma in a homicide, authorities said.
