An 84-year-old man was killed in a crash with a stopped semi truck Tuesday afternoon in northwest suburban Fox Lake.

Robert E. Ficarra was driving a 2000 Buick LeSabre north on U.S. 12 when the car rear-ended a truck with a flatbed trailer that was stopped for a red traffic light at the intersection with Big Hollow Road at 1:11 p.m., according to Fox Lake police and the McHenry County coroner’s office.

Ficarra was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 p.m., according to police and the coroner’s office. He lived in Round Lake Beach.

An autopsy Wednesday found he died of blunt force trauma to his chest and abdomen, according to the coroner’s office. He also had a blood clot in an artery supplying oxygen to his heart, which may have accounted for his erratic driving and swerving before the crash.

No other injuries were reported, police said. The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County is investigating.
