Nate Jones to DL, Carlos Rodon to 60-day, Todd Frazier scratched

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Reliever Nate Jones was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with right elbow neuritis, joining Carlos Rodon, James Shields, Zach Putnam and Jake Petricka among White Sox pitchers shelved by injuries.

The Sox also transferred left-hander Rodon to the 60-day disabled list.

General manager Rick Hahn called Jones’ injury “relatively minor” and said Jones could return in two weeks.

The contract of left-hander David Holmberg was purchased from Class AAA Charlotte to fill Jones’ spot on a staff that, despite the injuries, leads the majors with a 3.19 ERA.

Jones, 31, who had Tommy John surgery in 2014, was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 relief appearances this season.

“He’s got what we think is a relatively minor nerve irritation in his forearm,’’ Hahn said. “But he was feeling it down his forearm into his hand, which led to an MRI that diagnosed the issue. He’s going to progress according to his symptoms.’’

Jones hasn’t pitched since April 28 in Detroit.

“But at this time, based on his diagnosis, we are optimistic he could be back pitching in games within the next two weeks,’’ Hahn said.

Holmberg, who had a 1.76 ERA over six games with Charlotte, gave up a run in ‰ of an inning in Thursday’s 8-3 win.

Rodon throws off mound

Rodon has progressed slowly in Arizona but is getting closer to a rehab assignment, Hahn said. He threw off a mound for the first time this week since his only start in the Cactus League.

Rodon, 24, has been on the DL since April 2 (retroactive to March 30) with left biceps bursitis.

“We needed a 40-man [roster] spot, and based upon the program we have laid out ahead of him, at this point, we don’t believe he’s going to be completed with all of his eventual rehab starts by June 1,’’ Hahn said.

“We do have a program in place that has the expectation of multiple rehab starts. But again we don’t have a specific date yet to say he’s going to be pitching for this club on this date yet.’’

Frazier scratched

Third baseman Todd Frazier was scratched from the lineup with back stiffness. Frazier, who is day-to-day, said his back tightened up in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s 6-1 loss. Matt Davidson played third base for Frazier Thursday and hit a 450-foot solo home run. It was his fifth homer of the season.

“I was hoping it would go away this morning and nothing really got better so we’ve been doing a lot of [treatment],’’ Frazier said. “Hopefully I’ll be back out there tomorrow.’’

Avisail Garcia was moved from fifth to fourth in the lineup.
