Two people were killed in a crash Thursday afternoon near south suburban Crete.

A 2007 Chevrolet Malibu was heading south at 12:08 p.m. on Route 1, just south of Goodenow Road, when it crossed into the northbound lanes in front of a 1996 Peterbilt semi truck, according to Illinois State Police.

The truck hit the Malibu, forcing it off the west side of the road, where it came to a rest, state police said. The semi then left the road to the west and hit two pickups that were parked on the side of the road for utility work.

The driver of the Malibu, 48-year-old Mark Smith of Beecher; and his passenger, 53-year-old James Krawczykowski of Crown Point, Indiana; were both pronounced dead, according to state police. No other injuries were reported.

ISP Crash Reconstruction officers are investigating.
