A person was fatally struck by a freight train Sunday morning in the West Beverly neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The male, whose age was not known, was struck by the train at 3:43 a.m. near West 102nd Street and South Maplewood Avenue, according to Chicago Police.

“First responders confirmed to CSX that the person was fatally injured, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic event,” according to a statement from Rob Doolittle, Asst. Vice President of Media and Communications for CSX Transportation.

“Local CSX personnel are cooperating with local authorities investigating this incident,” Doolittle said. The train, which was heading from Chicago to North Baltimore, Ohio, consisted of two locomotives and 23 cars.

Police said the incident appears to be a suicide.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not release his name Sunday morning.

Normal service had resumed along the line as of 9:48 a.m., according to CSX’s statement.
