High school football Week 6: Scores, photos, video all in one place

Lincoln-Way East didn’t just stay unbeaten with a lopsided win over Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night. The top-ranked Griffins completely dominated their opponents in a 48-7 victory that served as a major statement to other schools about who’s the team to beat.

On a high school football weekend where several teams earned blowout wins, including No. 2 Batavia’s 48-0 shutout of Geneva and No. 3 Nazareth’s 55-17 dismantling of Carmel, the most impressive victory still came from the team atop the rankings. Homewood-Flossmoor entered Friday night ranked fourth in the area behind a stacked defense, yet it looked totally overwhelmed by Lincoln-Way East right from the start.

“I’m at a little bit of a loss,” Lincoln-Way East coach Rob Zvonar said. “It’s not only one of the best wins of the year but I think in the history of the program this one has to go right up there. To be able to finish with a score like that against such an elite squad is very satisfying.”

Top games of the week

Whoa, Lincoln-Way East

It’s difficult to spell out just how impressive the Griffins’ blowout win over Homewood-Flossmoor was. This was supposed to be Lincoln-Way East’s first big test of the season after routing five straight opponents in the first five weeks. Instead, the game was so far out of hand by the fourth quarter that a running clock was implemented.

Three different running backs – A.J. Henning, Devon Williams and Joran Corbett – each recorded at least 50 yards from scrimmage. Quarterback Jack Baltz threw for 169 yards off just 12 attempts. But most importantly, the defense totally shut down H-F’s attack, including star playmaker Leon Tanna, who was held to 77 yards on 22 carries.

Loyola falls again, this time to Montini

It’s fair to say the wheels have come off the track for the defending runner-ups this season. Loyola, which started the year ranked No. 2 on the Super 25, fell to Montini this week for its third consecutive loss. The Ramblers blew a late 27-20 lead in a 28-27 loss that drops their record to .500 this season. Here’s a look at the final minute-plus of the game:

New Trier knocks off Evanston

A couple weeks ago it seemed like Evanston could be a breakout team this year after its upset win over Barrington. However, the Wildkits have been exposed with back-to-back losses the past two weeks, including a 35-28 defeat against longtime rival New Trier on Friday night. Trevians cornerback Carson Kosanovich picked off two passes in the first quarter, including one he returned 20 yards for a touchdown, as the team built up a lead too big for Evanston to overcome in the second half.

New Trier may get some buzz on the Super 25 entering next week. The Trevians improved to 5-1, including 2-0 in the Central Suburban South, with the victory.
