A 17-year-old boy has been charged with shooting another teenager to death earlier this month in the Montclare neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Deonte Taylor faces a count of first-degree murder in the Oct. 8 shooting of 16-year-old Jose Alvarez, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

About 10:30 p.m., Alvarez was dropped off near his home in the 3000 block of North Rutherford after driving around with Taylor and two other people earlier in the evening, prosecutors said. All four occupants of the vehicle knew each other, and Taylor and Alvarez had been arguing in the vehicle before it arrived in the block.

When Alvarez got out of of the vehicle from a rear seat, Taylor exited the front passenger seat, prosecutors said. He pulled out a gun, pointed it at Alvarez and fired a single shot. The bullet struck Alvarez in the chest and exited his back as he fell to the street.

Taylor got back in the vehicle and ordered the driver to take him home, keeping the gun on his lap for the duration of the trip, prosecutors said. When he got out of the vehicle, the two witnesses to the shooting called police.

Alvarez was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead at 11:11 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Taylor, accompanied by an attorney, turned himself in to police Tuesday, according to Chicago police records.

Margaret Domin, Taylor’s court-appointed public defender, asked for a reasonable bond, citing his age and adding that he is a high school student who was planning to attend Malcolm X College after graduating early.

Judge Stephanie Miller cited Taylor’s “extensive” juvenile record, which included charges of armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon, in her decision to deny him bail at the hearing Thursday.

His next court date was scheduled for Nov. 13.
