Perry Cowan was just as good as I expected him to be tonight, maybe even a bit better.

DePaul Prep was kind of a revelation though. The Rams defended, moved the ball well and 6-6 senior Pavle Pantovic is much improved. They have shooters and it looks like just enough depth to make a serious run in Class 3A this season.

I wasn’t quite sold on them in the preseason. They were one of those teams that bounced up and down in the first Super 25 and would up kinda low. That will change on Sunday.

Once again I caught Providence-St. Mel on a lousy night, that has been a theme the past few years. Read all about the Rams’ win.

Friday’s top games

Fenwick 66, No. 22 Oak Park 65 OT: The Huskies drop another one. Sophomore Bryce Hopkins gets the winner in overtime.

Geneva 52, Wheaton-Warrenville South 49: Everyone knows that beating Mike Healy and WW South is no small task. The Vikings seem bound for the Super 25 sooner rather than later.

Rolling Meadows 55, Hersey 52: Sophomore phenom Max Christie scored 31. The Mustangs won it on a big three from junior Sean Nolan.

No. 12 Leo 54, Loyola 48: A nice road win in Jamal Thompson’s coaching debut. The Ramblers held Fred Cleveland to 13 but Kevin Drumgoole stepped up with a career-high 17 points. DaChaun Anderson had 12 points and 11 boards.

No. 14 Marian Catholic 63, Lindblom 56: Ahron Ulis and Chris White each scored 15 and Joe Green added 12. Another win for the Spartans but the score shows that Lindblom could be a factor this season. Shamar Pumphrey led the Eagles with 19.

No. 5 Bloom 53, Kankakee 45: Big, big night from Martice Mitchell with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Dante Maddox Jr. added 12 points and six rebounds.

Oak Lawn 72, Bremen 49: The Spartans are off to a 4-1 start this season. Sami Osmani scored 27 and had nine boards. Trey Ward had 17 and David Reyes added 14.

St. Rita 56, St. Ignatius 47: The Mustangs win at the Chicago Elite Classic. Jeremiah Oden had 12 points and eight rebounds.

TF North 60, Argo 29: The Meteors debut with a win. Tim Bankston’s squad is always kind of an unknown. Sincere Simmons scored 23.

Plainfield East 63, Plainfield North 52: Big rivalry win and very balanced scoring. Noah Woulard had 16, Christian Shumate 14, Yamani Shareef 15.

Richards 58, Lemont 55: Several people told me to keep an eye on Richards in the preseason. Don’t look now but the Bulldogs are 5-0. Trevon Jones had 21 points and 17 boards and KaJuan Wines scored 20.
