A 26-year-old man drowned in the McKinley Park Lagoon while trying to rescue his dog Saturday afternoon on the Southwest Side.

Paramedics were called about 1 p.m. to 2210 West Pershing Road for a man who fell through thin ice into the water, according to Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez. They pulled him and his dog out.

The 26-year-old, identified as Tao Jiang, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital but diedwithin the hour, Chicago police andthe Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the Southwest Side Brighton Park neighborhood.

An autopsy conducted Sunday found that Jiang died from drowning, and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.

The dog survived, authorities said.
