1 killed, 3 seriously injured in crash on Stevenson Expressway near Midway

A man was killed and three other people were seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday on the Stevenson Expressway near Midway International Airport.

About 12:25 a.m., a 28-year-old man was driving a beige 2004 Toyota Highlander north on Interstate 55 near Cicero Avenue when he lost control and the SUV crashed into a guardrail, causing it to spin out of control, according to Illinois State Police. Neither the driver or any of the SUV’s six passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Christian D. Barrajas, 22, of the Clearing neighborhood, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:58 a.m., state police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday found Barrajas died from multiple injuries related to the crash, and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were all taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, state police said. They all live in Chicago.

Charges were pending against the driver on Tuesday night, state police said. Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
