4 killed, 21 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago

At least four people were killed and 21 others were wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago.

The latest fatal shooting happened Sunday night in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. Hubert Eddings, 64, was walking about 10:50 p.m. in the 8000 block of South Michigan when someone shot him in his neck, stomach and back, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Eddings was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:32 p.m. He lived in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

Another man was shot to death early Sunday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. About 3:40 a.m., 29-year-old Christopher Lewis suffered a gunshot wound to the head while walking in the first block of North Mayfield, authorities said. Lewis, who lived in west suburban Oswego, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:56 a.m.

A 27-year-old man was killed Saturday night in an Englewood neighborhood shooting on the South Side. Jovan R. Killingsworth, who lived in the same neighborhood as the shooting, was shot multiple times in the upper body about 8:40 p.m. in the 1100 block of West 65th Street, authorities said. He was taken to Stroger, where he was pronounced dead at 10:21 p.m.

The weekend’s first killing happened within the same hour in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. Jontae Hunt, 17, was shot in the hip about 8:20 p.m. in the 8600 block of South Michigan Avenue, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Hunt, who lived in the same neighborhood, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 9:32 p.m.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened early Monday in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. A 35-year-old man was stopped at a red light about 2:15 a.m. in the 3900 block of West Ogden when a vehicle pulled up next to him and someone inside fired shots, striking him in the hand, police said. He was taken to Stroger, where his condition stabilized.

Hours earlier, two girls, ages 6 and 14, were wounded in a Hermosa neighborhood shooting on the Northwest Side. About 9 p.m., the girls were riding with a woman in a vehicle in the 4700 block of West North Avenue when another vehicle pulled up and the people inside exchanged words or gang signs with the driver before opening fire, police said. The younger girl suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle and the older girl was shot in her leg. They were both taken to Stroger in good condition.

In addition, a Chicago Police officer shot and seriously wounded a man about an hour earlier in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Officers pulled over a Dodge Magnum about 8 p.m. just south of 43rd Street on Ashland Avenue as part of a narcotics investigation, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

As officers were taking the three suspects out of the Dodge, one of the men pushed an officer and ran off, Guglielmi said. The man, whose age wasn’t immediately known, ran behind tractor trailers on 43rd Street, where an officer chased him and shot him multiple times. He was in serious but stable condition at Stroger, where he underwent surgery on Sunday night.

No weapons were recovered at the scene of the shooting and no officers were injured, police said. The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on routine 30-day administrative leave as the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates the incident.
