A woman was killed when she was struck by a vehicle early Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

About 2:40 a.m., a 22-year-old man driving a 2006 Honda struck 50-year-old Sharon Newman when he drove onto the sidewalk and crashed into a fence in the 1500 block of South Pulaski, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Newman, of Lawndale, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police initially reported that Newman was a passenger in the man’s vehicle and was thrown when the Honda rolled over.

An autopsy Monday found she died of multiple injuries when she was struck and her death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.

The driver was taken into custody after the crash under suspicion he was driving while intoxicated, police said. Charges were pending against him as of Monday evening.
