A man was killed early Thursday in a shooting and vehicle crash near the University of Chicago campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the South Side.

Armani D. Harris, 25, was stopped at a red light when another vehicle pulled up and someone fired multiple shots about 12:05 a.m. in the 1200 block of East Midway Plaisance, according to Chicago police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

He was shot in the head, left shoulder, lower right arm and right thigh. He drove off westbound and crashed his vehicle into a tree near Midway Plaisance Park and South Woodlawn Avenue, according to police and University of Chicago campus security.

Harris, who lived in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. An autopsy Thursday found he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.

UChicago sent out a security alert about the shooting and said he was not affiliated with the university.

Area Central detectives were investigating.
