A pair of Chicago Police officers shot and killed a pit bull that fatally mauled a 57-year-old woman Saturday afternoon in the South Deering neighborhood on the Far South Side.

About 12:25 p.m., the large pit bull attacked 57-year-old Karen G. Brown in the 10100 block of South Calhoun, biting her neck and body, according to Chicago police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Two responding officers then shot and killed the dog when it charged at them, police said.

Brown, who lived in the South Side Oakland neighborhood, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she died at 1:12 p.m., authorities said.

An autopsy Sunday found she died of multiple injuries from being mauled by the dog, the medical examiner’s office said. Her death was ruled an accident.

Area South detectives were investigating.
