A 2-year-old girl died after she was shot in the head Tuesday night in northwest Indiana.

About 6:51 p.m., officers responded to a home in the 1700 block of Polk Street and found Jayla Miller suffering from a gunshot wound to her head, according to Gary police.

Miller was taken in critical condition to Methodist Hospital Northlake in Gary and then flown to Comer Children Hospital, where she died about 9:30 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death was scheduled for Thursday.

On Tuesday, police said officers were interviewing a woman and man who were inside the home.

Police and the Lake County prosecutor’s office continued to investigate Wednesday evening.
