A man was accidentally shot to death shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve in northwest Indiana.

Police were called at 11:42 p.m. Monday for reports of a gunshot victim at a home in the 700 block of Kentucky Street in Gary, Indiana, according to a statement from Gary police.

They arrived to find 22-year-old Kevonte Alfred inside the home with a single gunshot wound to the body, police and Lake County coroner’s office said. He was taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m. Tuesday.

The coroner’s office said he died of the gunshot wound and his death was ruled a homicide.

Police said the shooting appeared to be accidental. A person of interest was taken into custody, questioned and released.

The incident remained under investigation and anyone with information was asked to call Det. Alex Jones with the Lake County/Gery Metro Homicide Unit at (219) 755-3855.
