A man was killed in a shooting Monday morning in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

Cornelius C. Hart, 37, was shot in the chest at 9:57 a.m. in the 300 block of East 53rd Street, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A witness told police she heard shots and saw the man collapse in a doorway before seeing another man between 25 and 27 years old running away on foot, police said.

Hart was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. He lived in the block where he was shot.

An autopsy released Tuesday found Hart died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide.

Police initially said he was 42 years old.
