Wounded police officer released from hospital

A veteran Chicago police officer was released from the hospital Friday, a month after he was shot while trying to arrest a shooting suspect in West Englewood.

Officer Adam Wazny was greeted by a crowd of officers as he left Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. His wife, Annie Wazny, pushed his wheelchair.

Wazny was wounded Sept. 21. near 65th Street and Winchester Avenue. Police were in the area searching for Michael Blackman, who was wanted for shooting a woman in the Fulton Market District three days earlier.

As police tried to take him into custody, Blackman opened fire, shooting Wazny in the groin and leg. The 16-year veteran was able to apply a tourniquet to his own wounds and underwent surgeries after he was hospitalized.

Blackman was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault to a police officer, aggravated battery with a firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
