A man was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday while trying to cross the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side.

The man, 56, was trying to run across the northbound lanes of Interstate 94 about 4:10 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle in the far right lane near 83rd Street, Illinois State Police said.

The man was taken to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, police said. The driver, a 37-year-old woman, was also hospitalized with injuries that weren’t thought to be life threatening.

Two lanes were closed as state police investigated, but they have since been reopened.
