A man was fatally struck by a car Wednesday morning in the northwest suburbs, according to police.

The 31-year-old was walking along Route 31 when he was struck by a northbound Chevrolet Traverse in unincorporated Crystal Lake, the McHenry County sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The crash happened about 5:55 a.m. near Daniel Drive, the sheriff’s office said. The Traverse was driven by a 40-year-old man from Cary.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. It was unclear why he was in the roadway.

Sheriff’s deputies closed the northbound lanes of Route 31 for about four hours, the sheriff’s office said.

The McHenry County coroner’s office has not released details about the death.
