Temperatures to drop below freezing overnight in Chicago

Temperatures in Chicago are expected to drop overnight Monday, plummeting into the low 20s by the time commuters wake up for work Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service reported temperatures will start falling around 6 p.m. Monday with the wind chill staying in the teens. Over the next 12 hours, temperatures will continue to drop to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit with the wind chill landing in the single digits.

Residents living along or just north of Interstate 88 can expect snowfall in the afternoon, the weather service said. Visibility will fall to about one mile as snow accumulates, creating possible slick conditions. Wind speeds may reach 40 miles per hour.

Wednesday temperatures will remain low with a chance of snow showers in the morning. By Thursday, temperatures are expected to rise back into the mid-30s before hitting the mid-40s on Friday, the weather service said.
