An Illinois State Police trooper was injured in a crash early Saturday on the South Side during a police chase.

At 3:10 a.m., a state police trooper began pursing a vehicle in the inbound local lanes of Interstate 94 near 47th Street, according to Chicago and state police.

The pursuit ended about five minutes later when the vehicles left the expressway and were involved in a crash in the 7600 block of South Lafayette, authorities said.

The state trooper, identified as a 27-year-old man, suffered a knee injury in the crash and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was in good condition, according to police and Fire Media Affairs.

Another state police squad car that was en route to the chase was involved in a crash with a vehicle in the 5500 block of South Halsted, authorities said. No injuries were reported in that crash.

Officers arrested the man driving the vehicle that was chased, state police said.
