Snow and freezing rain will make for a messy commute in the Chicago area Wednesday morning.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect for all of northern Illinois until noon, the National Weather Service said.

An inch or two of snow is expected, along with one-tenth of an inch of ice, the weather service said. The snow will transition into a mix of snow and freezing rain before sunrise.

Icing is possible across the region, but areas south of I-88 will see the greatest risk, the weather service said.

Travelers Wednesday morning should plan for slippery roads and limited visibility.

By 8 a.m. Wednesday, more than 240 flights were canceled and delays approached an hour at O’Hare International Airport, the Chicago Dept. of Aviation reported. Midway was reporting nearly 100 flight cancellations and delays less than 15 minutes.

The risk of icing will decrease in the early afternoon, and a light drizzle could continue the rest of the day, the weather service said. Temperatures will reach the mid-30s, and gusts of 30 mph are expected near Lake Michigan.

Overnight construction and lane closures were canceled on the Monroe Street Bridge over the Eisenhower and Kennedy expressways, the Illinois Dept. of Transportation said.
