A campaign office for 5th Ward aldermanic candidate William Calloway was shot at Monday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood.

Gunshots caused damage to the building at 2:49 p.m. in the 2000 block of East 71st Street, Chicago police said. Calloway’s campaign office is located at 2030 E. 71st St.

Police couldn’t say if the shooter was targeting the office specifically. The shooting was being investigated as criminal damage to property, police said.

Calloway started a Facebook Live video stream shortly before 3 p.m., claiming his office was shot at and showing bullet holes in the windows.

He said several campaign volunteers were in the office during the shooting, and that no one was hurt.

“It happened fast,” Calloway said.

He said he believes whoever shot at the office was driving past. Three shots hit the office, though Calloway believes more were fired.

“Public safety is of the highest importance and this goes to show that,” Calloway said. “When I’m elected, that’s going to be a top thing I focus on.”

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting, police said.
