A man was fatally shot Monday night in the basement of a building in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 11:41 p.m., 26-year-old Rodney Bell was sitting in the basement of a building in the first block of North Lorel Avenue when another male opened the door and fired shots, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Bell, who lived in the West Side Austin neighborhood, was taken to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to his chest and neck, authorities said. He was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning.

No one is in custody, police said. Area North detectives are investigating.
