Traffic was temporarily backed up on the Dan Ryan Expressway Thursday morning after a semitrailer overturned and spilled its cargo after hitting the Jackson Boulevard Bridge.
The semi was traveling at 7:13 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 90 near Jackson when the contents of its trailer hit the bridge, according to Illinois State Police. Debris hit a car and the container rolled on its side, spilling its load.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Guy Tridgell said the truck “exceeded legal height limits in the area.”
The driver, a 63-year-old man from St. Louis, Missouri, was cited for failing to reduce his speed, unlawfully damaging highway appurtenances and structures and driving a semi that exceeded height regulations, state police said.
The right and center lanes were closed after the crash but had been reopened by 7:44 a.m., state police said.
Tridgell said IDOT inspectors examined the bridge and found “no significant damage to the bridge that will impact traffic.”
