A man was killed when the SUV he was driving rear-ended a semi-trailer and caught fire Tuesday night in northwest Indiana.

Augustin J. Carreon, 30, was driving a 2017 Mazda CX9 west at a high speed about 9:45 p.m. on I-80/94 near the Portage exit, according to a statement from Indiana State Police. The Mazda then slammed into the rear of a flatbed semi.

The Mazda came to a stop in the center lane and burst into flames, state police said. Bystanders rushed to it but were unable to open its doors. The driver of the semi pulled over and called police.

A trooper showed up and used a fire extinguisher to no avail, police said. Carreon, who lived in Porter, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene.
