A 35-year-old man died several hours after he was shot Sunday in West Garfield Park.

Eugene Sims Jr. was unloading his vehicle in the 4100 block of West Wilcox Street just before 11 p.m. when someone opened fire, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition and was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m. Monday, authorities said. He lived in the neighborhood where he was shot.

An autopsy Tuesday did not rule on the cause and manner of his death pending further investigation, the medical examiner’s office said.

Area North detectives are investigating.
