6 killed, 21 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago

At least 27 people were shot–– six fatally––within city limits over the weekend in Chicago, including a 36-year-old woman who was killed by stray gunfire Friday while inside a store in Chicago Lawn.

Candice Dickerson was in a cellphone store about 6:28 p.m. in the 5900 block of South Kedzie Avenue when someone fired shots, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. She was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Earlier that day, a 17-year-old died after being hit by gunfire in Scottsdale on the Southwest Side.

About 5:44 p.m., Kenneth U. Pantoja was in the 8000 block of South Scottsdale Avenue when someone opened fire, authorities said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The weekend’s latest fatal shooting was reported just after midnight on Monday in Austin on the West Side.

Darnell D. Smith was found unresponsive by officers in the 200 block of North Long Avenue with multiple wounds to the body and a 16-year-old boy suffered a leg injury, authorities said. They were in an alley when someone in a silver sedan opened fire. The teen was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

A few hours earlier on Sunday, a 40-year-old man was shot to death in Fuller Park on the South Side. Damien L. Snerling got out of a parked car about 9:20 p.m. in the 4400 block of South Wells Street and was approached by a male who pulled out a gun and opened fire, police and the medical examiner’s office said. The man was hit multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two other fatal shootings happened within minutes of each other Saturday on the West and Far South Sides.

On the West Side, a 26-year-old woman was shot multiple times Saturday in Garfield Park.

Deserie Flowers was in a vehicle in the 3800 block of West Adams Street around 2:30 a.m. when someone in another vehicle drove up and unleashed gunfire, authorities said. She was hit in the chest, arm and abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Detectives are questioning a person of interest.

Minutes earlier, a man was killed in Morgan Park on the Far South Side.

Derrick Orange, 32, was shot inside a home in the 11200 block of South Homewood Avenue about 2:23 a.m., according to authorities. He was hit in the chest and taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

In nonfatal shootings, a man was wounded Saturday in Jeffery Manor on the South Side.

The man, 47, was arguing with someone at 7:21 a.m. in the 9600 block of South Crandon Avenue when shots were fired, police said. The man was grazed on the right forearm and taken to Trinity Hospital in good condition.

About 10 minutes earlier, a 24-year-old man walked into St. Bernard Hospital Saturday after being dropped off with a gunshot wound to his chest.

He arrived at the hospital about 7:10 a.m., but became unresponsive during treatment and was rushed to Stroger Hospital for further medical attention, police said. He is in serious condition.

Police believe the shooting may have happened in Englewood on the South Side, after a ShotSpotter picked up multiple shots being fired about 7:05 a.m. in the 5600 block of South Emerald Avenue. Officers arrived on the scene and found evidence of a shooting, police said. No arrests have been made as Area South detectives investigate.

A 26-year-old was injured in a drive-by Saturday in Lawndale.

She was riding in the backseat of a vehicle about 5:40 a.m. in the 4100 block of West 19th Street when someone fired shots from another vehicle, police said. She was grazed in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. No one was arrested, and Area Central detectives are investigating.

The weekend’s earliest reported shooting happened just after 5 p.m. Friday in Woodlawn.

A 23-year-old man was hit by gunfire in the 6600 block of South Rhodes Avenue, police said. He was struck in the abdomen and arm and was taken by a family member to Jackson Park Hospital in critical condition.

At least 17 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Last weekend, five people were killed and 24 were hurt in gun violence during the Easter holiday weekend.
