A truck spilled gallons of liquid fertilizer Saturday near homes in north suburban Volo.

About 10 a.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a chemical spill at the intersection of North Cornerstone Drive and Remington Drive in Volo, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office. They found a TruGreen fertilizer truck at the scene.

The truck leaked about 200 gallons of liquid fertilizer into a storm drain, the sheriff’s office said. Hazmat teams and the Fox Lake Fire Department determined the leak didn’t threaten the surrounding community, and crews dammed the drains to prevent fertilizer from flowing further.

The spill was apparently caused by a faulty container, the sheriff’s office said. An environmental group assisted in the cleanup and decontamination.
