Four people were injured — two of them fatally — in a crash Monday on I-290 in west suburban Elmhurst.

At about 7 p.m., a 22-year-old man driving a 2013 black Hyundai westbound on I-290 near York Road fell asleep at the wheel, according to preliminary information from Illinois State Police. The car veered off the road and struck a tower pole head-on, police said.

Backseat passengers Edward S. Jeon, 22, and Eden W. Chung, 19, were pronounced dead at an area hospital, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Jeon lived in Hoffman Estates and Chung lived in Roselle.

The driver and a 27-year-old man were taken to the same hospital in unknown conditions, police said.

Additional information on the crash was not immediately available.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
