A 9-year-old boy was killed after he was pinned under the ATV he was riding in rural Morris in the far southwest suburbs.

Authorities were called about 11:38 a.m. June 22 for a serious ATV crash in the 3800 block of North Dwight Road, the Grundy County sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Nicholas Ryan Harris was found pinned underneath an overturned ATV wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s office and Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Police, fire and EMS workers freed the child and took him to Morris Hospital.

Nicholas was then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead 12:55 a.m. on June 25, authorities said. He lived in the same block as the crash.

An autopsy released Wednesday found Nicholas died of traumatic asphyxia from the crash, the medical examiner’s office said.

“Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to this family,” the sheriff’s office said.
