Work begins on new road connecting Chinatown to downtown

Work on a new major artery between Chinatown and downtown is under way as part of a massive mixed-use development planned for the South Loop, the project’s developer said Tuesday.

The Wells-Wentworth Connector is part of the first phase of The 78, a development expected to sit on 62 acres bordered by Roosevelt Road, Clark Street, 16th Street and the Chicago River.

“Because The 78 will sit on 62 acres of land that has been undeveloped for 90 years, this road will directly connect the Loop to many neighborhoods, including Chinatown, for the first time,” Curt Bailey, president of developer Related Midwest, said in a statement. “The Connector will be a safe, beautiful streetscape to travel on, whether by car, bike or foot, and we’re excited about the positive economic impact it will have on the surrounding communities.”

The road is expected to feature sidewalks, a raised bike path, a large number of trees and extra-bright lighting.

The 78 project is expected to include a residential units, retail and restaurants, as well a 7-acre park.
