ABC-7 Chicago veteran meteorologist Tracy Butler on Monday revealed she’s “doing so very well” after recently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Butler announced Monday via statement and on-air in an emotional, pre-taped segment that she was diagnosed last December during a routine mammogram.

“That early detection saved my life,” Butler said emphatically, urging others to not put off mammogram screenings, no matter how busy life can get. “And it can save yours, too. No more excuses.”

A statement from Butler, posted on the station’s website read:

“I’m good. I’m really doing so very well. The strength & support of my family & my very close friends has been instrumental in such a positive outcome. But my message is one of motivation to everyone to pay attention to YOU! Give yourself a GIFT & take care of you.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and during the segment, Butler and Dr. Arpi Thukral of the Bhorade Cancer Center at Good Samaritan Hospital discussed the importance for screenings and early detection of the disease, which, on average, strikes one in eight women in the U.S.

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States,” Thukral said. “But the good news is in that the last three decades, we’ve seen a dramatic decrease in the death rates in women from breast cancer by about 40 percent and this is really due to early detection. Early detection saves lives.”
