A Lincoln Park Zoo lion died last week as he was being housed at another zoo in Kansas.
Sahar, a 9-year-old male lion, died between Thursday night and Friday morning at the Rolling Hills Zoo in central Kansas, according to a statement on the zoo’s Facebook page.
Sahar and two female lions had been there since early June as the Lincoln Park Zoo renovates its lion habitat.
Last Thursday, the staff at Rolling Hills “noticed a difference in Sahar’s behavior and a physical exam was conducted to see what might be the cause.”
“Nothing abnormal was found, and he seemed to be a little better after the exam,” the zoo said.
He was taken to Kansas State University, where a necropsy was planned to determine the cause of death.
African lions can live to be up to 30 years old in captivity, according to the Zoological Society of London.
