White Sox announce player-development staff

The White Sox announced changes to their player development staff Monday, including new managers for five minor league teams.

Wes Helms (Class AAA Charlotte), Justin Jirschele (AA Birmingham), Ryan Newman (Advanced Class A Winston-Salem), Guillermo Quiroz (Class A Kannapolis), Mike Gellinger (Advanced Rookie Great Falls) and Ever Magallanes (Arizona Rookie League) will serve as the organization’s managers in 2020. Helms, a coach at Birmingham last season, and Quiroz are new as managers in the Sox system, while Jirschele (2019 with Winston-Salem) and Newman (2019 with Kannapolis) moved up the chain.

Jirschele, 30, is considered one of the up-and-comers in the Sox player development system. So is Everett Teaford, 35, who was named pitching coordinator after two seasons as the assistant pitching coordinator. Kirk Champion, who is taking on a scouting role, is out as minor league pitching director. As assistant coordinator, J.R. Perdew is now No. 2 on the pitching instructor chain.

Matt Zaleski was promoted two levels to pitching coach at Charlotte, with Charlotte pitching coach Steve McCatty dropping down to rehab pitching coach in Arizona,

Perhaps the most familiar name on the entire staff is former Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar, whose career was shortened when he suffered a brain aneurysm during a Sox game in 2018. Farquhar will be the pitching coach at Winston-Salem.

Chris Getz enters his fourth season as director.
