A Maywood couple in their 70s and 80s died Sunday after their furnace malfunctioned and overheated their west suburban home.
The son of the couple checked on his parents’ home Sunday afternoon and found the temperature to be “abnormally hot,” Maywood police spokesperson Carmen Rivera said in a statement.
Paramedics responded to their home in the 1200 block of South 15th Avenue at 2 p.m. and found the couple inside, Rivera said.
Leevell Robinson, 80, died at the scene, while Ora Robinson, 78, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center and pronounced dead hours later.
The son told police the furnace was previously serviced after malfunctioning, Rivera said.
Autopsy results released Monday revealed they died of heat exposure due to a furnace malfunctioning, the medical examiner’s office said. Their deaths were ruled accidental.
