Walmart delivering live Christmas trees, installing your outdoor holiday lights

Before the Thanksgiving turkey has been carved or even cooked, the push for Christmas trees and lights has already begun.

And Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers, wants to help with the work and is the latest to announce plans to deliver fresh live trees joining Home Depot, Lowe’s and Williams Sonoma.

“This year, Walmart is making it even easier for our customers to bring these hallowed holiday traditions into their homes — without ever having to leave,” TJ Stallbaumer with Walmart wrote in a blog post. ”This holiday season, Walmart will hang your lights, or deliver a live Christmas tree right to your doorstep.”

But staying off of the ladder comes at cost.

Installation is $129 for single-story homes and $199 in two-story homes. But putting them up is only part of the cost. Removal of the lights is $99 for a single-story home and $159 for two-story homes.

And the lights are not included in the costs. You’d need to “supply the lights, clips or anchors, and extension cords.”

“To get lights installed, simply add Christmas Lights Installation Service to your cart,” Walmart’s Stallbaumer said. “After checkout, Handy will reach out via email to schedule an installation appointment..”

Handy is a platform for household services like installation and cleaning similar to TaskRabbit.

“We understand the holiday season could look different this year. It may include staying home more than usual or never having to leave your neighborhood to see lit up homes,” Stallbaumer wrote in the blog post.

Walmart unveiled the details of its final Black Friday sale of the season earlier this week. The online sale starts at 6 p.m. Nov. 25 and stores open 5 a.m. local time on Black Friday. Target released its Black Friday ad Thursday.

Home Depot also offers Christmas light installation through its ”Pro Referral marketplace” and says the cost varies depending on the size of the job, design and complexity.

“A simple display can cost $100 to $300 for an average size home,” Home Depot says on its website. “Or it can cost more than a $1,000 to light up a large property with an elaborate display.”

The website WeHangChristmasLights.com says it offers free estimates for its installation services and directs consumers to HomeAdvisor.com to get an estimate.
