Amie Harwick, a Hollywood-based therapist who once was engaged to comedian Drew Carey, was found critically injured at her home Saturday and later died, according to police. She was 38.

Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, 41, was arrested and charged with her murder after she was found unresponsive below a balcony with injuries “consistent with a fall,” the Los Angeles Police Department announced in a news release Sunday.

Officers responded Saturday at 1:16 a.m. to a call of a “woman screaming” at a Hollywood Hills home, where Harwick’s roommate told officers Harwick was being assaulted, police said.

Police also said a restraining order Harwick had filed against Pursehouse had recently expired.

She and Carey, 61, were engaged in 2018 and called it quits less than a year later.

“Amie and I had a love that people are lucky to have once in a lifetime,” Carey said in a statement to USA TODAY Monday. ”She was a positive force in the world, a tireless and unapologetic champion for women, and passionate about her work as a therapist. I am overcome with grief. I would like to thank you in advance for giving myself and everyone who loved Amie privacy while we try to work through this tragic situation.”

Harwick, who earned psychology degrees from California Polytechnic University and Pepperdine University, specialized in marriage, family and sex therapy, according to her website. She appeared in the 2015 documentary “Addicted to Sexting” and wrote the book “The New Sex Bible for Women” in 2014.
