Meghan and Harry’s interview and its aftermath

The two-hour soul-baring conversation with Oprah Winfrey has sent shockwaves across the globe.

Meghan and Harry’s first interview since stepping away from royal life included multiple bombshells that sent shockwaves across the globe.

In a two-hour soul-baring conversation with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that she had experienced suicidal thoughts over how she was being treated since marrying Prince Harry and felt anguish over a discussion regarding her son’s skin color.

The couple painted a deeply unflattering picture of life inside the royal household, depicting a cold, uncaring institution that they had to flee to save their lives.

Since the interview aired on Sunday, March 7, Buckingham Palace released a statement expressing sadness in learning how challenging the past few years were for the Duke and Duchess, and concern over “the issues raised, particularly that of race.”

Harry and Meghan announced they were quitting royal duties last year, citing what they said were the unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media, and moved to North America. That split became official this year, and the interview was widely seen as their first opportunity to explain their decision.

Here’s what we know about the interview and its aftermath:
