Teen dies of complications nearly 2 years after Mundelein shooting

A 16-year-old boy wounded in a 2019 shooting in Mundelein has died from his injuries, and an autopsy has ruled his death a homicide.

Carys Castillo was pronounced dead at 11:14 p.m. April 16 at Lurie Children’s Hospital, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

He was wounded Sept. 28, 2019 in the 200 block of Longwood Terrace, the medical examiner’s office said. Mundelein police said the teen was found in an apartment, and that witnesses gave officers conflicting statements.

Autopsy results found Castillo died of complications from his gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

Mundelein police didn’t immediately provide further information.
