A person was shot while driving on Interstate 57 Tuesday night in the south suburbs.

The shooting happened about 10:20 p.m. in the southbound lanes between 159th and 167th street, according to Illinois State Police.

The shooting victim was hospitalized with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, state police said in a statement.

The southbound expressway was closed until about 1:30 a.m. for an investigation.

State police have reported 56 expressway shootings in the Chicago area this year, a 167% increase over the same period last year. Between Jan. 1, 2020, and April 5, 2020, state police investigated 21 expressway shootings.
