Man, 72, struck and killed by car in Avalon Park

A motorist hit his brakes to avoid a car in front of him and swerved into the right lane, hitting the man, police said.

A man was struck and killed by a car Saturday afternoon in Avalon Park on the South Side.

William Jones, 72, was hit around 1:50 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Stony Island Avenue, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A motorist hit his brakes to avoid a car in front of him and swerved into the right lane, striking Jones, police said.

Jones was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead.

The driver was issued citations for failing to reduce speed, hitting a pedestrian and driving without insurance, police said.
