"Learn at AGB" explores the many ways to advance your career through courses at AGB Institute.

Nestled between St. Rita of Cascia High School and a bustling railroad port in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side sits the headquarters of AGB Investigative Services – a 16,000 square foot building that houses the largest Black-owned security firm in the United States.

Founded in 2001 by husband-and-wife couple, John Griffin Jr. and Dr. Denitra Griffin, the security firm is opening its doors to welcome Chicago residents and beyond as students of AGB Institute.

This training center is a nonprofit that prepares, trains and empowers students in basic and advanced security skills.

AGB has dedicated 2,300 square feet of its headquarters to the institute’s three classrooms where they teach weekly virtual and hands-on security courses – the only security firm in Illinois with an Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) approved training program.

Now, more than ever, security training and readiness is a necessity.

As crime rises in Chicago, organizations are turning to private companies to help combat security risks. The AGB Institute has seen an increased demand and encourages security professionals to upgrade their training with their Armed Certification Course.

This in-depth training covers in-person or virtual class hours on safety protocol, use of force and shooting fundamentals, followed by in-person range training.

“Our armed courses are not only designed to teach basic and advanced techniques, but to give our students the confidence to handle their firearms correctly and safely,” says Training Manager Elisa Brooks, who has trained hundreds of students through the institute.

“Our classes are sought after because we go above and beyond to make sure students are properly trained when entering the next phase of security,” she says.

AGB Institute has trained thousands of officers across the nation through its armed certification course, preparing them for real-life situations. The course prepares officers for security positions; roles that have remained relatively stable throughout the pandemic and economic uncertainty.

“The connections that are made between our instructors and students are special. They instantly become a part of the AGB family,” says AGB Institute Executive Director Stacey Branham.
