It was clearly a game of two weather patterns.

First, it was cold and dry. Home-standing Wauconda took advantage of that and fell a homer short of a team cycle in the first frame.

And then the rains came down on Friday afternoon. Scoring the winning run for Stevenson was leadoff man, Charlie Ling. And strangely enough, he scored that run after striking out leading off the Patriots’ seventh inning.

Rather than fight Mother Nature, Jacobs pitcher Ryan George wrapped his arms around her and squeezed.

An already chilly, breezy afternoon was made more challenging midway though Friday’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division baseball game in Huntley when a steady rain began to fall.

The fine line between success and failure in baseball can be razor thin.

Consider what happened to Naperville North on Friday at Neuqua Valley.

With two outs in the fourth, Matt Pillatsch had Alex DiFranco picked off first but the throw from first hit DiFranco in the back, providing Neuqua a reprieve.

Will Drake took advantage, hitting a two-run homer off Pillatsch to snap a 1-1 tie and put the Wildcats in front for good en route to an 8-1 victory.

When McHenry third baseman Bobby Miller tapped a sharp grounder through the legs of Richmond-Burton first baseman Trevor Anderson to lead off the fourth inning, it looked like he might become an crucial baserunner for the Warriors. To that point, McHenry had put only three runners on base and recorded no hits in what was shaping up to be a pitcher’s duel.

Instead, Miller became the first of 14 McHenry runners to score over the game’s final three innings. The Warriors turned the low-scoring affair into a rout, defeating the Rockets 15-3 in six innings.
